R.J. Manuelian Criminal Defense Lawyer

Los Angeles Attorney - R.J. Manuelian R.J. Manuelian was voted by his peers as a Rising Star in 2009 and 2010 by Southern California Super Lawyers. He won 4 back-to-back criminal cases in late 2009 and defended more than 10 trials that year. He represents clients who he feels he can help. Aside from being a talent in the courtroom, he counsels and helps his clients get their lives back on track. For R.J., its not about financial gain, rather, his passion is to help people who make bad mistakes. R.J. Manuelian was born and raised in New York. He graduated St. Johns University and pursued a Masters Degree from Long Island University with his thesis on Juror Bias: The Socio-Economic and Racial Differences Between a Juror and Defendant. R.J. later attended the Massachusetts School of Law outside of Boston. In 2002, he opened his law office in downtown Los Angeles and has been practicing criminal defense exclusively since. He has handled hundreds of criminal cases, ranging from cases involving DUI and motor vehicle crimes to murder.

Mr. Manuelian has tried countless jury trials. He has obtained many acquittals and produced hundreds of positive results for his clients in both State and Federal Court as a result of his experience, knowledge and relentless representation and advocacy. R.J. was published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal as being one of the attorneys who assisted in getting a $4.5 Million verdict against police officers who beat both of his clients, shot them both with pellet guns and then made a false arrest in order to conceal their actions all while their family members watched. He represented both clients in the criminal trial and won back to back acquittals for both paving the way for one of the largest civil rights verdicts in United States history. He has been asked by the media to provide legal commentary and his expertise has been used on CNN as well as other CBS and NBC affiliates. Commanding the respect from Judges and Prosecutors, he is a showman in the court who captivates a jurys attention and decimates his opposition. In February 2010, he was the cover story for Hollywood Weekly. The article stated ¦R.J., it could be said, comes from the Hannibal Lecture school of cross-examination: complete obliteration.

An example of his talent is best demonstrated in the People v. Hoxey/Smith. R.J. represented two young African-American citizens who were profiled as gang-members and drug dealers. Both Sherriffs senselessly beat both citizens causing severe injuries to both Mr. Hoxey and Ms. Smith. In actuality, Mr. Hoxey was waiting for Ms. Smith, a pre-med student, to braid the hair of a young girl. He was waiting in his vehicle when two Sherriffs pulled alongside his vehicle. Thinking he was a gang member and drug dealer, they forced him out of the vehicle, beat him with their hands, knees, batons and flashlights thinking no one would care.

They caused Mr. Hoxeys skin to melt and peel off when the Sherriffs held his face and body down on the scalding hot pavement while they were beating him and trying to arrest him in an attempt to conceal their unlawful actions. His girlfriend was also beat when she came to his rescue. In a movie-like moment, a former President of the NAACP Compton chapter coincidentally pulled to the scene and witnessed the entire incident as well as 20-30 other citizens who witnessed one of the worst Civil Rights violations in United States history. The NAACP representative and two young citizens were arrested and charged with a false crime in order to cover up the Sherriffs conduct. Mr. Manuelian was able to show the jury that the Sherriffs planted drugs in the car after to make it seem that these two law abiding African-American citizens were drug dealers. R.J. demonstrated through a rigorous cross of 7 Sherriffs that they had motive to lie, namely, avoiding being arrested by the Department of Justice for Civil Rights Violations.

On February 20, 2009, in the middle of trial, R.J. forced the District Attorney to give up and dismiss the case. He is now assisting both clients in their Civil Rights lawsuit currently set for trial this May in United States Central District Court in California. R.J. Manuelian is a member of many professional and community service organizations. He is a member of both the NAACP and NAEJA (National Justice for Equal Protection in America). His cutting edge technological skills combined with his strategy of always being on the offense has assisted hundreds of his clients from avoiding jail or prison. A respected California State Court Judge, described Mr. Manuelian as "aggressive" and said, "...if you were arrested, you want someone like Mr. Manuelian fighting your case."

Mr. Manuelian believes that all of his clients, including ones who admit committing crimes, deserve a second chance. His philosophy is simple: "Sometimes good people make bad mistakes. I learned at a very young age that the most important aspect in someone's life is their freedom and the right for a second chance. I fight for those for my clients as though I am fighting for family. If youre a lawyer just to make money, its going to show in your attitude and your results. That is what makes me different than other attorneys. I became a criminal defense attorney to help people, to become a criminal defender not a criminal pretender.
